Non-Surgical Treatment Methods for Avascular Necrosis

Avascular Necrosis is a type of most common refractory orthopedic diseases. Up to now, there is still no certain treatment can completely cure different types, different stages and different necrosis volume of avascular necrosis.

Making reasonable treatment schedule needs the comprehensive consideration of stages, necrosis volume, joint function and patient’s age and other factors. However, the most important is to know the primary cause of one patient’s condition. Avascular necrosis can be divided into traumatic and non-traumatic,
two types. The former type is mainly caused by femoral neck fracture, dislocation of hip joint and other trauma on hip, while the later type is mainly caused by application of corticosteroid medicines and excessive drinking. All of these factors lead to the stop or damage of blood supply, and then bone cells death and structural change of femoral head and functional loss.

Despite of the difficulty of its treatment, there are some treatment methods can help the patients reduce suffering of the symptoms, improve life quality and prevent from surgery and disability, which makes it is possible for patients of avascular necrosis to live a better life. There are three aspects helpful.

1, protective weight-bearing treatment. In order to reduce the collapse of femoral head, patients can adopt crutches, which can also relieve pain. But wheelchair is not advocated.

2,medication treatment, which is suitable for early stages (0、I、II). Patients can adopt some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve pain under the direction of doctors. Alendronate Sodium can prevent from collapse of femoral head. Medicines for dilating vessels also have some treatment effects. For the hypercoagulable and hypofibrinolysis state, low molecular heparin and Chinese medicine can be adopted.

3, physical therapy, including external seismic wave, high-frequency electric field, high pressure oxygen, magnet therapy and so on. They have good effects on relieving pain and promoting bone repair.

Timely and proper non-surgical treatment can help patients control the progression of the disease. While the main propose of treatment is to recover or improve the blood supply, reduce the bone cell necrosis, repair the partly necrosed cells and prevent disability.
