How to Treat Inflammation in All Joints

Inflammation in all joints is a symptom of rheumatoid arthritis. It’s caused by an inflammatory response triggered by immune system of human body without the foreign substance attack. We call this over and wrong inflammatory response as autoimmune disease for the immune system will damage the tissue of human body. Today we are talking about how to treat inflammation in all joints.

There are many choices to treat inflammation in all joints, such as medication treatment, physical treatment (such as massage, acupuncture and moxibustion), exercise treatment, and surgery treatment to diminish the inflammation. The treatment is up to patients’ condition, including their gender, age, medical history, severity of the disease and so on.

Anti-inflammation medication is the most commonly and effectively used treatment for inflammation in all joints. The medication treatment is aiming at reducing inflammation so as to prevent erosion, deformity and function loss of joints. Then what medications should be used to treat inflammation in all joints of rheumatoid arthritis?

There are many anti-inflammation medications for decreasing joint pain, swelling, and inflammation even preventing the progression of the inflammatory disease. These medications generally can be divided into 4 categories:

a)NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), such as aspirin, indometacin, celebrex or ibuprofen, are the first-line drugs for inflammation in all joints of rheumatoid arthritis. They can reduce the inflammation and pain of rheumatoid arthritis but can’t prevent the progression of rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore they need combination use with other medications.

b)DMARDs (Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs).

c)Corticosteroids (prednisone is most frequently used).

d)Immunosuppressive Drugs and TNF (tumor necrosis factor). Inhibiting drugs, used for modifying the immune response.


These medications are effective for treatment of Inflammation in all joints, but they all has side effects. Usually, stronger medications have more serious side effects and more complications. Therefore a regular test and drug monitoring should be performed when taking them.
